Jatinangor, 10 December 2020 – Geographical Indications (GIs) are a form of intellectual property which must be recognized and protected, to achieve this the understanding of GIs is therefore very fundamental. If GIs are not fully protected, the gross amount of localized Indonesian products, will not be effective in increasing the Indonesian economy.

The Certified Geographical Indication Training Program 2020 (CGITP), led by Helitha Novianty Muchtar, S.H., M.H., was held in consideration of the necessity to understand and protect GIs. This training program was held through a partnership between the Study Center for Regulation and Application of Intellectual Property (PS RAKI); Department of Technology, Information, Communication and Intellectual Property; Directorate General of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Law and Human Rights; in collaboration with The Indonesian-Swiss Intellectual Property Project Phase II as an agenda of the Internationalization Unit, Faculty of Law, Universitas Padjadjaran headed by Dr. Laina Rafianti, S.H., M.H. The  CGITP was held virtually via the Massive Online Course Learning in Virtual Environment Universitas Padjadjaran (MOOC LiVE Unpad) and Zoom platform on 23 November 2020 to 10 December 2020.

The CGITP invited several distinguished speakers among others Prof. Irene Calboli; Stephane Fournier, Ph.D.; Delphine Marie Vivien, Ph.D.; Prof. Dr. Ir. H. Mahfud Arifin, M.S.; Miranda Risang Ayu Palar, S.H., LL.M., PhD.; Dr. Rendi Aridhayandi, S.H., M.H.; Dr. Catharina Ria Budiningsih, S.H., M.CL., S.P.1.; Dr. rer. nat. Ir. Suseno Amien; Dr. Djamal Thalib, S.H., M.H.; Tatty Aryani Ramli, S.H., M.H.; Dr. Komarudin Kudiya; H. Usman Suparman as the Head of Masyarakat Pelestari Padi Pandanwangi Cianjur and Adel Chandra, S.Kom, M.M. as a representative from the Directorate of Trademarks and Geographical Indications, Ministry of Law and Human Rights.

The CGITP was held to further support experts of intellectual property and government stakeholders to gain feedback towards the legal structure of GIs Protection in Indonesia, further strengthen the Capacity of intellectual property consultants, increase the general awareness towards Intellectual Property and analyze the potential of GIs along with supporting ongoing GIs cases.

Although held online due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, 17 participants enthusiastically participated in the training program. Participants themselves represented from several institutions and agencies such as Universitas Padjadjaran, Universitas Wiralodra Indramayu, Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (LIPI), Assegaf Hamzah & Partners, Pachta & Pachta Counsellors at Law, Law Offices of Olga K. Santoso, Erpani & Partners, dan Kantor Hukum BHP.

The program consisted theoretical learning sessions along with a virtual field study at Kampung Budaya Padi Pandanwangi, Dsa Mekarwangi, Kecamatang Warungkondang, Kabupaten Cianjur, Jawa Barat in the protection of Beras Pandanwangi Cianjur to implement legal theories and the general understanding of GIs gained through the CGITP. Participants were also given the task to formulate an action plan and a final examination to evaluate their knowledge on GIs. Finally, participants who have completed CGITP were certified as geographical indication experts.
